Leadership for Aspiring Directors

I have created a new LinkedIn group called Leadership for Aspiring Directors.
This group is intended to support aspiring directors to Board Level positions, to achieve their potential, their goals and be successful with attaining their desires. Group members will be served with resources to enable them to be more optimal with communication, strengthen their leadership, address issues that create high performance and reduce poor performance.
At the time of this post, there are three conversations. Among the three conversations is, the conversation on courage as follows:

Among the first steps to Leadership is courage – by courage I mean the ability to face down those imaginary fears and reclaim the power of your leadership. Yet, so often systems, structures and styles can get in the way of your exercising your courage. So lets open up the conversation:

What does courage mean to you?

In what situations might you be holding back your courage or backing down on doing the right thing in your leadership role?

Have you ever had a time in your leadership role when you needed to take an action or course of action but lacked the courage to take the action?

Note, the world’s greatest leaders act courageously and face their challenges.

Please invite others to the conversation and to the group.

Enliven the conversation, in a few days I will post courage building exercises.

Further information is available in the group description. The link for the group is https://lnkd.in/dc4a8fX

Build Your Emotional Capital

Build Your Own and Your Organisation’s Emotional Capital

The primary role of a leader is to create emotional wealth for competitive advantage. When the tools of emotional intelligence are in the hands of leaders, the tools open the doors to the remarkable, creative entrepreneurial energy that exists in all genuine leaders. Leadership is central to unleashing the best performance. Jim Collins book – “Good to Great”[1], cites three elements:

  1. Leadership is critical
  2. The right people
  3. Values – a set of values which people are corporate about, the values that define corporate success

Your emotional capital is crucial to your success. The relationship between success and emotional intelligence has indicated that star performers (people who outperform their peers) score significantly higher on emotional self-awareness, self-actualisation, empathy, inter-personal relationships, flexibility, problem-solving and stress management.[2]

Emotional intelligence has been called a soft skill, but research shows that it delivers bottom-line business results. “Research has confirmed that emotionally intelligent leaders are indeed more successful than their less emotionally intelligent peers.”

Self-awareness lies at the core of emotional intelligence and no truly effective leader operates without self-awareness.

Self-Awareness was highlighted by the Harvard Business Review in an article entitled, “Breakthrough Ideas for Tomorrow’s Business Agenda.” The article stated, “Executives who fail to develop self-awareness risk falling into an emotionally deadening routine that threatens their true selves. Indeed a reluctance to explore your inner landscape not only weakens your own motivation but can also corrode your ability to inspire others.[3]

Martyn Newman in his book “Emotional Capitalists”[4] the New Leaders refers to today’s top executives as, “emotional capitalists.”

Emotional Capitalists score high on self-reliance, assertiveness and optimism. In other words, high performing leaders are self-directed, they take responsibility for themselves, possess an independence of mind in managing their thoughts and values. High performing leaders are able to express their thoughts and feelings in a non-aggressive way; are open to sensing opportunities; possess the ability to maintain a positive approach and remain persistent even in the face of major challenges.

In terms of business, the three competencies: self-reliance, assertiveness and optimism enable a person to: model self-assured behaviour, communicate a clear view of the organisation’s vision and direction, inspire the confidence of others and deal with setbacks in a positive, constructive way.

Research that looked at the predictors of success in the workplace across hundreds of occupations found the one factor of emotional intelligence that consistently showed up, almost regardless of job type was self-actualisation. According to psychologist Steven Stein, there are two components to self-actualisation as a skill. The first involves a person having a passion for what she or he does; the second component involves being well-rounded. In the process of self-actualising a leader builds emotional capital by producing his or her best work, this in turn enables others to believe that they can produce their best, too.

Another factor that differentiates high performing leaders from the rest is their score on self- confidence. Effective leaders have high degree of self-confidence. Self-confidence is built on the twin emotions of self-liking and self-competence and it determines the quality of a person’s relationship.

We build human capital by investing in people to create value. Being able to bring out the best in people is largely based on the expectations we have of them.

Leaders high in empathy understand the task their people must perform and sense the feelings, needs and perspectives of others.

Everyone’s emotional intelligence needs are different and different jobs require different levels of emotional intelligence[5] Jobs even require different aspects of emotional intelligence – for instance, if one works in a job which requires a high level of contact with other people, one may need more of an ability to manage emotions and deal with human dynamics and stresses.

Beacon Organisational Development offers systematic assessment of the seven signature strengths of Emotional Capital and their applications to leadership. This system builds on the knowledge that emotional intelligence is made up of flexible skills that can be learned. The Emotional Capital Leadership System is a powerful, proven, seven-step process that leverages these seven conditions to maximise the development of emotional intelligence in leaders.

Integrity Matters

Without integrity nothing worksMichael Jensen

Excellence in your leadership requires you to demonstration of integrity. Integrity in your business and personal life is fundamental to you being an honourable person with trustworthy character. A leader without integrity lacks credibility and authenticity.

Warren Buffet remarked – In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy; and if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.

Recently, one of my mentors reminded me powerfully – You don’t need to defend, you don’t need to prove; you just need to be the person that you are and act with integrity.

So, here follows a few questions to set the context:

  • What if every person within your organisation were demonstrating integrity?
  • How would your organisation be?
  • Does the quality and integrity of relationships matter?
  • How might you demonstrate integrity even more?
  • Does thinking about how you want to be remembered as a leader have anything to do with how you demonstrate your leadership?

What is Integrity?

There sometimes exist confusion between integrity, morality and ethics. When you are acting with integrity, you honour your word. It is neither whether you are good or bad, or what should or should not be.

Werner Erhard et al suggest that in fact, integrity is far more than that. Integrity is actually a phenomenon in and of itself. Webster’s dictionary, defines integrity as a state or condition of being whole, complete, unbroken, unimpaired, sound, perfect condition.

Integrity – being whole and complete is fundamental to being an excellent leader. There exists an atmosphere of trust when a leader’s word can be trusted and as such integrity is a necessary condition for workability, which determines the available opportunity for performance within a unit or organisation. That means operation or behaviour to increase effectiveness and agreed outcomes. Werner Erhard et al states: To the degree that integrity is diminished, the opportunity for performance (the opportunity set) is diminished.

So what does it mean to honour your word?

You either keep your word, or as soon as you know that you will not keep your word, you say that you will not be keeping your word to the people who are counting on your word and you acknowledge the impact of not keeping your word to yourself, to the team – others, and the impact on the performance of your organisation as a whole.

If everyone were clothed with integrity, if every heart were just, frank, kindly, the other virtues would be well-nigh useless.

  • Moliere [Jean Baptiste Poquelin]
  • Tartuffe, V, i (1622-1673)

So, here follows a few questions to set the context:

  • What do you consider to be the meaning of integrity?
  • Does the quality and integrity of relationships matter?
  • How might you display integrity?
  • Does thinking about how you want to be remembered as a leader have anything to do with how you demonstrate your leadership?

The bottom line in regard to integrity, you will discover that integrity resides in the ability to establish yourself as your word, to be true to your principles, and ultimately, be true to yourself. You will discover that integrity is not constrained by, nor does it reside in, rules, prescriptions, or imposed demands. Integrity creates an environment of freedom, power, and joy.

Problems inherent in the lack of integrity is related to collective denial and self-deception. Shared values and assumptions play a positive and necessary role in holding any group together. But when a team of senior managers suffer from collective denial and self-deception—when they cannot unearth and question their shared assumptions—they cannot innovate or make corrections to the course of actions effectively. That often leads to business and ethical disasters.

Integrity and Relationships

The most important relationship that you have in the world is the relationship you have with yourself.

  • What is the legacy that you want your leadership to leave?
  • Are you comfortable as the leader you are in your leadership or are you trying to be someone else?
  • Are you true to yourself?
  • Are you able to live up to your own expectations or are you living with the expectations of others?
  • Do the expectations of others leave you feeling inadequate and incomplete?

Integrity means being true to yourself: being honest, decent and impeccable with your word both to yourself and in dealing with others. When you are guided by integrity, your thoughts and words are in alignment with each other and your actions align with your principles.

Don’t ever stray away form yourself to get closer to someone else.

So what are the principles that are guiding your thoughts, choice and decisions?

There is no living thing that is not afraid when it faces danger. The true courage is in facing danger when you are afraid.

  • Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

Your conduct speaks louder and more eloquently than your words.

A person may forget what you said but the person may never forget the feeling your conduct evoked in that person.

Your conduct becomes the root for your reputation and self-respect. Integrity demands courage, the courage to be you, the courage to do the right thing? Courage to follow your intuition (inner tuition), courage to go against the crowd and when needed courage to stand alone, if and when your conscience tells you to do so. Courage to live your truth, act on your truth and lead with integrity.

I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.

  • Nelson Mandela

Displaying Integrity

No matter how educated, talented, rich, or cool you believe you are, how you treat people tells all. Integrity is everything.

When you display integrity, you can be counted on to stand up for what is right, even if it is unpopular, you can be counted on to behave with honour even when you are not under scrutiny.

The display of your integrity allows other people to trust you because you can be counted on as a person who values your commitments and you seek to live by your commitments, even when those commitments are challenging to fulfil. Commitment to your staff, to your family – social and biological, and the commitment to work towards creating a better world creates a pivotal space for loving relationship and shared enterprises.

You honour a principle: I will have the moral courage to make my actions consistent with my knowing of right and wrong.

How do you want to be remembered as a leader?

Think hard About Your Framing

Thoughtful framing means communicating your vision, mission, purpose, shared values key principles and interventions in a way that enables your people to understand what you have in mind. A well-framed communication strikes a cord in people, speaking to their hopes and fears. It means starting where people are, not where you are. Well-framed communication inspires people to move forward.

Remember Martin Luther King Jr, he anchored his dream in the American dream. By doing so he reminded Americans of the starting point for their nation, challenging people to give life to their dream, not only his own.

People use specific nature to choose and decide, some people are very logical in their approach and others give more attention to their intuition. It is important that you connect your language to resonate with the varying preferences of people in regard to influence, interest and choice. Host steady, poised listening, listening silence and be interested in people’s thoughts on innovation be interested to hold the centre of people’s attention.

I have found that throughout my various leadership roles I have been able to bring out the best in people through adapting certain qualities, such as:

  • Pointing to long-term solutions rather than quick fix.
  • Framing the challenges inside of integrity and offering interpretations and current realities even when it made some people uncomfortable.
  • Using discomfort to drive progress balancing caring and challenging to achieve results.
  • Levering unusual networks of relationships within as well as outside the business.
  • Focusing on developing people so that they are able to harness adaptive capacity to deal with on-going change and transition.
  • Expanding the circle of individuals and teams who need to be consulted in exploring possible solutions to problems.
  • Asking more questions than as opposed to issuing more directives.
  • Building extra time into meeting agendas so that important issues are not bypassed.

What is the framing for your leadership inside of integrity?

Command Your Wealth

What do You Believe about Your Right To Be Rich?

I am presenting this blog to bring my diverse contribution to a wider audience. Some of my clients are expressing challenges with their wealth to develop their business. As part of my on-to-one coaching is the application of The One Command® to enable my clients to move beyond what is stopping, locking and blocking them from the success that they desire.

The Universe is waiting for you to  Command Your Wealth

Developing your business or your enterprise is continuous process and that requires you to focus on being all that you are capable of becoming and actualise your full potential. Life is advancing more and more and the pace is quickening with new technology and the global raising of consciousness. As life advances and becomes more complex wealth is required  and that wealth is at your bandwidth.  The benefits of actualising your potential are as follows:

  • You are able to satisfy your desires and move your vision of the future into being probable, certain and actual
  • You transfer your ideas into intellectual property that is capable of creating financial profits for you and your business
  • You are able to contribute to the advancement of other people by conscious collaboration, cooperation and co-creating a world that adds value to human and other sentient beings
  • You are able to have better recreation and retreat that enables you to think more clearly and more powerfully
  • You are able to fully express love, when there is poverty, the full expression of love is denied

Did You Know that there are scientific principles for getting rich?

  • Getting rich is neither limited by your environment nor by your personality. There is a science of getting rich, and it is an exact science, like algebra or arithmetic.
  • Getting rich is not dependent on your talent
  • Getting rich is not dependent on capital to get started
  • You can get rich in any business, any profession or in any neighbourhood
  • No person is kept poor because opportunity has been taken away or because other people have monopolise the available wealth
  • No one is kept in shortness of supply of riches, there is more than enough for everyone.
  • The visible supply of substance is practically inexhaustible and the invisible supply is inexhaustible. Everything on earth is made from one original substance, out of which all things proceed. New forms are constantly being made and old ones are dissolving; but all are shapes assumed by One Thing. There is no limit to the supply of Formless or Original Substance

The Law of Wealth is the same for everyone and we all have equal opportunity in applying the law of wealth.

The clearer you are able to understand that are Universal Laws of Getting Rich and that if and only if, you work with the laws, instead of resisting, or fighting or swimming against them, you will see your finances improve again and again.

Instead of questioning the scientific principles of getting rich – commit to accepting the principles, practice the principles and observe the difference and the results.

Here follows a synopsis of the Laws of Wealth – From the Science of Getting Rich by Wallace D. Wattles:

  • There are certain laws which govern the process of acquiring riches; once there laws are learned and obeyed, you will get rich with mathematical certainty. The first Law of Wealth – Know that there is no limit to supply from the formless. No person is poor because there is not enough. Not ever!
  • The Formless Substance responds to the needs of mankind; Spirit will not let the world be without any good thing. The Universe is made out of Formless Substance but the Formless was not used in making the Universe.
  • The spaces in, through, and between the forms of the visible universe are permitted and filled with the Original Substance; with the formless Substance, with the raw material of all things. Ten thousand times as much as has been might still be made, and even then we should not have exhausted the supply of universal raw material.
  • No person, therefore,  is poor because nature is poor or because there is not enough to go around. nature is an inexhaustible storehouse of riches; the supply will never run short. Original substance is alive with creative energy, and is constantly producing more forms.
  • This is true of humankind collectively; the race as a whole is always abundantly rich, and if individuals are poor, it is because they do not follow the Certain Way of  being and doing things which makes the individual a rich person.
  • The Formless Substance is intelligent; it is substance which thinks. It is alive, and always impelled toward more life.
  • It is the natural and inherent impulse of life to seek to live more, it is the nature of intelligence to enlarge itself, and of consciousness to seek to extend its boundaries and find fuller expression.
  • The universe of forms has been made by Formless Living Substance, throwing itself into form in order to express itself more fully.
  • The universe is a great Living Presence, always moving inherently toward more life and fuller functioning. Nature is formed for the advancement of life; its impelling motive is the increase of life. For this cause, everything that can possible minister to life is beautifully provided; there can be no lack unless Divine Spirit (God) is to contradict the Universe and nullify the work of the Universe.

A New Kind of Leadership

“ . . . the idea of the future being different from the present is so repugnant to our conventional modes of thought and behaviour that we, most of us, offer a great resistance to acting on it in practice.”

  • John Maynard Keynes, 1937

We are at a critical juncture in the history of human kind and a new kind of leadership is required to lead us into a new optimal world. The world is changing and we are entering a period of instability.  We are expecting to see significant trends within the next 3-4 years such as:

  1. Mobile devices are ever increasing. The primary method of communication in most businesses is by mobile devices. A new kind of leadership is needed to prepare both suppliers and purchasers for this increasing trend.
  2. Substantial numbers of new internet users are coming on-line, primarily from Africa, Asia and Latin America. As an entrepreneur it is essential to be internet savy. As a supplier, if your on-line offer is absent, then you are missing your share of the world sales.
  3. Organisations need to be flexible with a new kind of leadership, many projects will be managed on line, business may need to invest in creative, innovation and inspiring modes of production, learning and development opportunities.
  4. New technologies and new sciences will provide wider access to education, supply and demand. Hence, people will be empowered to reduce poverty. Economic trends suggest that there will be a growth in the global middle class, greater educational attainment, widespread use of new communications, manufacturing technologies, advances in health-care such as gene therapy and gene technology.
  5. Population trends show that approximately half the world’s population is under 27 years in age.

These trends raise significant questions

  • What do we mean by a new kind of leadership?
  • How will we lead in the future?
  • What is the education curriculum for the leaders of the future?
  • How will those in leadership response to global volatility and imbalance of resources?
  • Will there be a new kind of leadership to enhance the empowerment of human kind and release creativity of everyone for a new optimal world?
  • Will rapid changes and shifts in power and resource distribution lead to more interstate and intrastate conflicts?
  • What will be the role of emotional intelligence in reducing conflicts?
  • How will we use new and emerging technologies to provide energy, clean water and shelter? How will new technology boost economic productivity and solve problems? So lets be optimistic and say solutions exists, in the face of those solutions what will be a new kind of leadership?

In addition to the trends already mentioned  there are tectonic shifts—critical changes to key features of our global environment that will affect how the world “works”

The growth of the global middle class constitutes a tectonic shift: for the first time, a majority of the world’s population will not be impoverished, and the middle classes will be the most important social and economic sector in the vast majority of countries around the world. Individual empowerment is the most important mega-trend because it is both a cause and effect of most other trends—including the expanding global economy, rapid growth of the developing countries, and widespread exploitation of new communications and manufacturing technologies.
