Excellence in your leadership requires you to demonstration of integrity. Integrity in your business and personal life is fundamental to you being an honourable person with trustworthy character. A leader without integrity lacks credibility and authenticity.

Warren Buffet remarked – In looking for people to hire, you look for three qualities: integrity, intelligence and energy; and if they don’t have the first, the other two will kill you.

Recently, one of my mentors reminded me powerfully – You don’t need to defend, you don’t need to prove; you just need to be the person that you are and act with integrity.

 So, here follows a few questions to set the context:

  • What if every person within your organisation were demonstrating integrity?
  • How would your organisation be?
  • Does the quality and integrity of relationships matter?
  • How might you demonstrate integrity even more?
  • Does thinking about how you want to be remembered as a leader have anything to do with how you demonstrate your leadership?

What is Integrity?

There sometimes exist confusion between integrity, morality and ethics. When you are acting with integrity, you honour your word. It is neither whether you are good or bad, or what should or should not be.

Werner Erhard et al suggest that in fact, integrity is far more than that. Integrity is actually a phenomenon in and of itself. Webster’s dictionary, defines integrity as a state or condition of being whole, complete, unbroken, unimpaired, sound, perfect condition.

Integrity – being whole and complete is fundamental to being an excellent leader. There exists an atmosphere of trust when a leader’s word can be trusted and as such integrity is a necessary condition for workability, which determines the available opportunity for performance within a unit or organisation. That means operation or behaviour to increase effectiveness and agreed outcomes. Werner Erhard et al states: To the degree that integrity is diminished, the opportunity for performance (the opportunity set) is diminished.

So what does it mean to honour your word?

You either keep your word, or as soon as you know that you will not keep your word, you say that you will not be keeping your word to the people who are counting on your word and you acknowledge the impact of not keeping your word to yourself, to the team – others, and the impact on the performance of your organisation as a whole.

If everyone were clothed with integrity, if every heart were just, frank, kindly, the other virtues would be well-nigh useless.

 So, here follows a few questions to set the context:

  • What do you consider to be the meaning of integrity?
  • Does the quality and integrity of relationships matter?
  • How might you display integrity?
  • Does thinking about how you want to be remembered as a leader have anything to do with how you demonstrate your leadership?

The bottom line in regard to integrity, you will discover that integrity resides in the ability to establish yourself as your word, to be true to your principles, and ultimately, be true to yourself. You will discover that integrity is not constrained by, nor does it reside in, rules, prescriptions, or imposed demands. Integrity creates an environment of freedom, power, and joy.

Problems inherent in the lack of integrity is related to collective denial and self-deception. Shared values and assumptions play a positive and necessary role in holding any group together. But when a team of senior managers suffer from collective denial and self-deception—when they cannot unearth and question their shared assumptions—they cannot innovate or make corrections to the course of actions effectively. That often leads to business and ethical disasters.

Integrity and Relationships

The most important relationship that you have in the world is the relationship you have with yourself.

  • What is the legacy that you want your leadership to leave?
  • Are you comfortable as the leader you are in your leadership or are you trying to be someone else?
  • Are you true to yourself?
  • Are you able to live up to your own expectations or are you living with the expectations of others?
  • Do the expectations of others leave you feeling inadequate and incomplete?

Integrity means being true to yourself: being honest, decent and impeccable with your word both to yourself and in dealing with others. When you are guided by integrity, your thoughts and words are in alignment with each other and your actions align with your principles.

Don’t ever stray away form yourself to get closer to someone else.

So what are the principles that are guiding your thoughts, choice and decisions?

A person may forget what you said but the person may never forget the feeling your conduct evoked in that person.

Your conduct becomes the root for your reputation and self-respect. Integrity demands courage, the courage to be you, the courage to do the right thing? Courage to follow your intuition (inner tuition), courage to go against the crowd and when needed courage to stand alone, if and when your conscience tells you to do so. Courage to live your truth, act on your truth and lead with integrity.

Displaying Integrity

No matter how educated, talented, rich, or cool you believe you are, how you treat people tells all. Integrity is everything.

When you display integrity, you can be counted on to stand up for what is right, even if it is unpopular, you can be counted on to behave with honour even when you are not under scrutiny.

The display of your integrity allows other people to trust you because you can be counted on as a person who values your commitments and you seek to live by your commitments, even when those commitments are challenging to fulfil. Commitment to your staff, to your family – social and biological, and the commitment to work towards creating a better world creates a pivotal space for loving relationship and shared enterprises.

You honour a principle: I will have the moral courage to make my actions consistent with my knowing of right and wrong.

 How do you want to be remembered as a leader?

Think hard About Your Framing

Thoughtful framing means communicating your vision, mission, purpose, shared values key principles and interventions in a way that enables your people to understand what you have in mind. A well-framed communication strikes a cord in people, speaking to their hopes and fears. It means starting where people are, not where you are. Well-framed communication inspires people to move forward.

Remember Martin Luther King Jr, he anchored his dream in the American dream. By doing so he reminded Americans of the starting point for their nation, challenging people to give life to their dream, not only his own.

People use specific nature to choose and decide, some people are very logical in their approach and others give more attention to their intuition. It is important that you connect your language to resonate with the varying preferences of people in regard to influence, interest and choice. Host steady, poised listening, listening silence and be interested in people’s thoughts on innovation be interested to hold the centre of people’s attention.

I have found that throughout my various leadership roles I have been able to bring out the best in people through adapting certain qualities, such as:

  • Pointing to long-term solutions rather than quick fix.
  • Framing the challenges inside of integrity and offering interpretations and current realities even when it made some people uncomfortable.
  • Using discomfort to drive progress balancing caring and challenging to achieve results.
  • Levering unusual networks of relationships within as well as outside the business.
  • Focusing on developing people so that they are able to harness adaptive capacity to deal with on-going change and transition.
  • Expanding the circle of individuals and teams who need to be consulted in exploring possible solutions to problems.
  • Asking more questions than as opposed to issuing more directives.
  • Building extra time into meeting agendas so that important issues are not bypassed.

A New Kind of Leadership

We are at a critical juncture in the history of human kind and a new kind of leadership is required to lead us into a new optimal world. The world is changing and we are entering a period of instability.  We are expecting to see significant trends within the next 3-4 years such as:

  1. Mobile devices are ever increasing. The primary method of communication in most businesses is by mobile devices. A new kind of leadership is needed to prepare both suppliers and purchasers for this increasing trend.
  2. Substantial numbers of new internet users are coming on-line, primarily from Africa, Asia and Latin America. As an entrepreneur it is essential to be internet savy. As a supplier, if your on-line offer is absent, then you are missing your share of the world sales.
  3. Organisations need to be flexible with a new kind of leadership, many projects will be managed on line, business may need to invest in creative, innovation and inspiring modes of production, learning and development opportunities.
  4. New technologies and new sciences will provide wider access to education, supply and demand. Hence, people will be empowered to reduce poverty. Economic trends suggest that there will be a growth in the global middle class, greater educational attainment, widespread use of new communications, manufacturing technologies, advances in health-care such as gene therapy and gene technology.
  5. Population trends show that approximately half the world’s population is under 27 years in age.

These trends raise significant questions

  • What do we mean by a new kind of leadership?
  • How will we lead in the future?
  • What is the education curriculum for the leaders of the future?
  • How will those in leadership response to global volatility and imbalance of resources?
  • Will there be a new kind of leadership to enhance the empowerment of human kind and release creativity of everyone for a new optimal world?
  • Will rapid changes and shifts in power and resource distribution lead to more interstate and intrastate conflicts?
  • What will be the role of emotional intelligence in reducing conflicts?
  • How will we use new and emerging technologies to provide energy, clean water and shelter? How will new technology boost economic productivity and solve problems? So lets be optimistic and say solutions exists, in the face of those solutions what will be a new kind of leadership?

The growth of the global middle class constitutes a tectonic shift: for the first time, a majority of the world’s population will not be impoverished, and the middle classes will be the most important social and economic sector in the vast majority of countries around the world. Individual empowerment is the most important mega-trend because it is both a cause and effect of most other trends—including the expanding global economy, rapid growth of the developing countries, and widespread exploitation of new communications and manufacturing technologies. (Source Mega Trends 2030) holds the possibility for a new kind of leadership. A leadership where the aspiration of human beings are encouraged. A world in which there is adequate nutrition for all, primary health care is more accessible to all, people are sheltered and there is care for their mental, physical, emotional and spiritual well-being.
